“I’ve got your baby.”
In February 2003, days after my first precious Bichon, Suzi Elizabeth, went to heaven, my dear friend Robin Pressnall called.
“I’ve got your baby.”
My baby’s life began in a puppy mill, and had she not been saved by Small Paws Rescue at the tender age of five months, she was destined to spend her life churning out puppies for someone’s profit. Instead she and her siblings were on their way to loving adoptive homes, and Robin had picked her out especially for me.
“I’ve got your baby.” And truer words were never spoken.
My baby, named Robin for my friend and Faith for what sustains our souls, was a true mama’s girl. She was my baby, from the minute Robin Pressnall put her in my arms until the moment her soul left her body.
Robin Faith was an adorable, shy, cuddly puppy who grew into a beautiful, loving, and sensitive adult. She was everypuppy’s friend. When new foster dogs came into my home, especially the senior, blind or shy ones, Robin was their first and most loyal friend. She loved everypuppy and she saw the good in each one, even the bullies, the fear biters, the misbehavers. And without exception they all loved her back. She was also very in tune with the others’ medical needs, often acting as my first alert system if someone was having issues.
She was always by my side. Always. If I was home, Robin Faith was right there with me. Every night she slept on my pillow, wrapped around my head. She was never a lap dog but always sat next to me or at my feet, gazing adoringly at me. Even as cataracts diminished her sight, that look never changed. It was pure love.
“I’ve got your baby.” Robin Faith would have turned 13 years old on Sunday, September 20, 2015. Unfortunately, today I had to say good-bye to my baby. She was too sick and weak to continue fighting the diseases that ravaged her little body. As I held her for the last time, I wished with all my heart that I could keep her here with me. But it was time to let her go. So I held her, kissed her for the last time, and said to God,
“I’ve got your baby.”
