You have been my best friend and faithful companion for 18 long years
And as I watch you grow so old before me, it brings me to tears.
It breaks my heart to think of how you used to be
So full of life, keen eyes and ears, always looking out for me
Now, its my turn to look after you.

Ive been more than blessed to have my friend so long.
You’ve outlasted any human friend I’ve ever known.
Those long walks in the park, playing our pinecone race
I always loved that playful look on your face.
On our luckiest days still, I get a glimpse of youthful beauty and grace.

Your eyes, now turned a soft smokey blue,
Are still filled with unconditional love when I look at you.
Your hearing is now gone for good
So, our eyes meet, and I guide you.
I will take care of you till the very end
My loving kind and faithful friend.

Dedicated to my lovely Candy, 1985-2003

Candy was my black lab. I grew up with her. She lived with me all through high school and college, until I was 32 years old. I wrote this poem the year before she died. She was truly the very best friend I ever had. I miss her each and every day. I love you, Candy.
