Mitzi was abandoned with her loyal canine companion when they were 14 and 13 years old, because their people were getting new carpeting. Put in separate cages in the shelter, Mitzi’s companion broke a few teeth trying to chew through the cage to get to her. Mitzi, resigned to her fate, curled up in a little ball and waited to die.
Instead, a compassionate shelter worker alerted me to their plight, and the devoted duo came home with me in May. Mitzi’s companion took gentle care of her, making sure she ate, drank and slept, always watching over her with a loving and protective eye. Nothing was too good for his Mitzi.
This little old 12-lb. girl had her share of challenges. She was in Congestive Heart Failure. Often she would lay in her bed and watch her friend play with toys. He knew better than to try to tempt her to play, but he never left her alone too long.
As the months passed, Mitzi’s weak heart stabilized, and she and her loyal protector settled in to our family and our hearts. But today Mitzi’s body dealt her another blow. She went into renal failure and there was nothing to be done to maintain her quality of life. With a heavy heart we had to let our little girl of only six months cross the Rainbow Bridge, and now we hold her companion and try to help him in his grief.
I don’t know the people who abandoned them but I hope their new carpet was worth to them the pain these two beautiful little souls endured when they were abandoned.
We on the other hand will love and miss Mitzi and comfort and care for her companion until we are all reunited again as the family we truly are.
