I found Scout at our local animal shelter in December 1994. As I was walking through the kennel all the dogs were standing up at the gates and barking for attention — except for one. There she was sitting silently with her head hung down in the middle of her cell nothing but skin with coarse hair draped over bones. The red “X” on her card meant she would be euthanized the next day so I asked the attendant if I could get
in the cell with her.
I sat down against the far wall and asked her if she’d like to come home with me and be my friend. She walked over to me put her head on my shoulder and gave the deepest sigh. We fell in love instantly. I named her “Scout” after the little girl in my favorite book and movie….To Kill a Mockingbird.
She’d been so terribly mistreated but we finally were able to get her to good health. She was the most beautiful Boxer — what a face. Scout was my pet my companion my friend my absolute joy…and my heart. She had so much unconditional love that shone through her eyes; and the face of an angel. Scout was our devoted friend for 7 years and 1 month and then her little heart
just gave out.
She was in bed with my husband and I and we held her and told her how much we loved her until she passed in her sleep. I am so blessed to have been her Mom and friend and to have had this most
wonderful soul in my life.
Thank you Scout
I miss you with every breath.
