Yorkie
The best Tribute for Emily
is from my friend Kathy:
Ah Mel I'm sorry.
Emily had such a great life with you.
She was a very lucky little dog.
For those of you who have never had the luck
to really *know* a small dog
and think of them in stereotypical way
let me tell you about Yorkies.
These fierce little animals were bred to kill rats
and other vermin animals almost as big as they are.
They have the courage of a badger,
the tenacity of a sheepdog and the brain of a scientist.
And more heart than
I've ever seen in any 100 lb. dog.
Small dogs are fierce and loyal and
spend their entire lives
battling a world hundreds of times bigger than they are.
When I worked in an animal shelter
it was common for the hugest dogs to be hiding
in terror under their bunks
unable to cope with the stress of the alien environment
they found themselves in.
But the smallest dogs would be right at the gate
hackles up barking furiously letting the world know
that while they might be imprisoned
they were ready for battle.
They always reminded me of JimmyCagnet
(who was a very small man)
in one of his gangster roles:
"Come on you lousy coppers! Come and get me!
I ain't goin' down wit'out a fight!"
It's hard to fill the gap in your heart when you lose
a giant you love.
