In 1 hour, I will be bringing my beloved Sammy to the vet. She is 18 and has been in ill health for many weeks. I kept hanging on, one more Christmas, one more trip to camp, one more night. In my heart I have known that each day is a gift and her journey is almost over. Brought home from the pound, when she was 3,
she quickly found her way into my heart.
Everyone always said she loved me so much, because I rescued her. She has a special place in the hearts of all my family, and this Christmas, everyone said goodbye. As I write this, she is sleeping and I am remembering:
* her fierce loyalty
* how she guarded my 2 children in their strollers
* how she chased chipmunks (never catching any)
* how she would get a burst of energy at the camp, and run circles, with so much delight.
Sammy was the only one who truly understood me and never asked for anything in return.
I cannot imagine coming home without her, but I know in my heart that she deserves to leave this world as she lived in it…with dignity, loyalty and love.
I shall carry a piece of her
in my heart always.
Love you Sammie!
You have been my greatest gift,
