I am writing this Tribute on behalf of a homeless man (Walter) who lost his best mate Woofie last year. Woofie was 14 years old and had been Walter’s mate
since he was a 6 month old pup.
We would see Walter and Woofie walking up the street where we worked. Some people felt sorry for Woofie living a life like that, but I assured them he was well looked after. We would often talk to Walter and Woofie would stand beside him waiting. Then off they would go, slowly up the pathway.
Walter let us know of Woofie’s passing. We could tell he was heartbroken. Woofie’s passing was very quick, from old age, and was with Walter when he died. Walter and another homeless man helped to bury Woofie under a willow tree on the banks of the river.
I remember telling Walter that my darling dog Waffle died about the same time as Woofie did. We both shared the same heartache. I gave Walter a sympathy card and a small poem about a dog’s love and all they ask for is friendship. I have written it below the Tribute.
Woofie, you are in Heaven now, with all the other animals. I often think of you as I drive home past where you are buried. Your Dad isn’t far away, in his spot where you both use to sleep. He is still there, feeding the birds. He looks lonely though as he walks without you by his side.
I know you are walking beside him though. Look after him Woofie. Your Dad is a very intelligent man, anyone only has to talk to him to know that. We wonder why he has chosen to live this way.
You are free now Woofie. Enjoy your frolicks in the green pasture and playing with all the other animals.
You are in my thoughts. Look out for my two darling doggies Polly and Waffle and also another darling doggie Beamer. That’s my friend Beth’s baby. They will all play with you.
Poem
The dog makes no dinstinction between the great and the humble…the rich and the powerful..
And those who have nothing to offer except their company
He protects the lonely and leads the blind
He shares our follies, our triumps and disasters, Our homes and our families.
Through the dog we enrich our lives and in return,
He asks only that we give him what he gives us – Friendship.
