Katie by Carol Morgan / Carol and Lynn

Katie,

Twelve years ago, you were just an abandoned German Shepard at the local animal shelter. I tried to find you a home–one lady said she had been looking for a German Shepard. But when she saw you, she said your tail curled up too much for you to be a purebred, and since you weren’t purebred, she didn’t want you. So, I took you.

You lived in the big city of New Market for a while, and then you moved to the farm. You were a wonderful farm dog–so kind and gentle with the goats, and the cats. You enjoyed the horses too, although you did like to bark at them every now and then. You loved living at the barn–watching over your kingdom. And you were always on the job. Even after your arthritis started to bother you. But then,
you developed an inoperable tumor.

When we went to the barn to check on you yesterday morning, we knew it was your time. Although your big brown eyes were as bright as ever, we could tell how hard it was for you to get up. And it was painful to walk.

I think you were ready to go, because the end was so peaceful and calm.
