Puppy Boy,
I still remember the day Lynn brought you home. It was a few days before Christmas in 1996. You were my Christmas gift. When I got home, you were asleep on the couch in the living room and Lynn was asleep on the other couch. You were just about 8 weeks old–a fat, adorable puppy. I played with you a long time before Lynn woke up.
I named you Stonewall, but we somehow ended up calling you Puppy Boy. It soon became apparent that you were Lynn’s dog–not mine. You tolerated me, but you loved Lynn. You were so happy when Lynn came home in the evening. You would hop up in the truck and go to the farm with Lynn to feed the animals. You were so happy.
In December of last year, we learned that you had an enlarged heart–and that there was no cure. The vet said you would likely live 6 months-1 year. You had to have special medication and a special diet. We were so careful to follow the doctor’s orders–we wanted to keep
you around as long as possible.
That Saturday morning, Lynn and I were going to work in the garden and I said we should let you go and sit in the truck in the shade and watch. You always loved it so. Lynn and I hadn’t been out of the truck more than 2 or 3 minutes when I heard you cry out one time. I yelled for Lynn and ran to you. By the time I got there you were limp. Lynn and I tried to do CPR, but it didn’t work. Our Puppy Boy was gone. We brought your body back in the house so that Bailey could see you–we hoped it would help her understand why weren’t going to be there any more.
Cindy came by to see you one last time. Lynn dug a grave and we wrapped you in one of the blankets you loved. I put a pair of my old shoes that you had chewed
up in the grave with you.
We’ve all been very depressed since you’ve been gone.
Tomorrow, we are going to get a new weimaraner from the weimaraner rescue. He is 4 years old and his name is Kraymer. We met him last Sunday. He looks a lot like you, but he is thinner. He loves to play with tennis balls and frisbees. We know that Kraymer can never replace you–you were such a special dog.
But, I think we need another dog. And I know you would want us to have another dog since you can’t be here. So, I hope Kraymer works out.
And, I hope I see you some day in heaven.
