A Letter For The Dog Who Was Always Afraid

Dear Bear,

As the end of our time together draws near, there are some things that we need to tell you.

We know that when you bite people, you do it because you are afraid that someone will hurt you again. I wish you knew how much you are loved, and that no one wants to hurt you anymore. For 8 years, we have tried to reassure you of this, but we have not been able to reach you.

When you bit Daddy, we were not angry at you, because we knew you only did it because you were scared. We cried not because Daddy’s hand hurt(although it did), but because despite our best efforts, we realized that you still live your life in constant fear.

We are afraid, too. We’re afraid that one day you’ll really hurt someone. So we’ve made the most difficult decision we’ve ever had to make. We have decided to guide you to a place where you will have no fear. There, you will be reunited with your best freind Buka. Together you can run in the meadows and enjoy plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Your sore leg won’t bother you anymore and you’ll be able to eat bacon anytime you wish.

Someday, Daddy and I will come for you and Buka, and we’ll all be together again. In the meantime, not a day will go by that we don’t think about you. We’ll always remember the cuddles and kisses, the softness of your coat, your soulful brown eyes, and your adorable furry little Grinch feet.

Until we meet again, may God’s love keep you warm and safe, our friend, Bear.
