Callie by Cheryl / Callie, the Calico cat

Callie was more like a dog than a cat, and even played “fetch” in her younger years with little gray “mousies.” She was always a quick learner, exceptionally bright and kept me on my toes as I learned to never under estimate her actions or abilities. She was so friendly to others, and so affectionate and devoted to me, that I often felt she was a Golden Retriever in a previous life.

Callie would greet everyone at the screen door with a friendly “meow” She assumed they were there to see her. She loved to “talk,” be the center of attention and join in any conversation. She was the only cat I knew that came with a letter of recommendation from a landlord!

All through her life, Callie had an incredibly fun, outgoing, friendly and youthful spirit. She was highly personable, loved people, and often made my friends — her friends. Callie and I shared the most incredible bond, and we were each others best friend for 19 1/2 years.

Friday, June 15th, was Callie’s last day on earth. She was just 2 months shy of 20 years old! I was there for Callie and Dale was there for me. Writing this has helped me realize that my difficult decision was right for the time and right for Callie. From her, I learned that special friends come in many forms and there is never a good time or enough time
to say “good-bye.”

Callie had known better days but remained fairly bright, upbeat, talkative, affectionate and most of all — “the center of attention” in our house, till it was time to go. That was Callie. She was cremated and I will put her ashes in the special round tin that held her coveted “mousies” for so many years.
