I’ve lived.
I saw my family dissolve
when I was a child.
I served my country during
the Viet Nam war and was spat on.
I’ve lost a woman I loved,
a job I counted on and family and friends
I cared for
And I survived.
I Met a new women to love and trust.
She gave me children and brought
unimagened joy to my heart.
We are a family.
I’ve always felt a family
without a dog is not complete.
In my deepest recessess
I know “dogs chose humans” and
we should in greatfulness
return that favor.
I brought home KoKo,
who became my field trial
partner and smiling dog
She Left us too soon and
is now a faded memory.
“Koko Was A Good Dog”.
Shiloh next came into our lives.
He was a funny little Beagle
who always made us smile.
He was a family friend and
my bud for 14 years.
Shiloh left us while
our son was away at college.
“Shiloh Was A Good Dog”.
My son could’nt bear
the thought of no dog at our house
so he saved a dog from
a last chance rescue shelter.
When my son brought Max home,
I did’nt want him nor did I ask for him.
It soon became obvious Max wanted me.
Max bonded with me and soon me with him.
He came to us from a terrible place
where he was unloved, abused and neglected.
In our home he learned what love,
trust and family was about.
We only knew him for 10 months.
When it came to be known to us
that Max was seriously ill
we fought to keep him.
He was too young to die.
Now I hear a familiar noise and look.
I wake up in the morning,
expecting to see Max, and then
realize he’s gone. I come in from the yard,
still half expecting to see
him meet me
at the door .I no longer hear him
crying for me to come up from the basement,
nor see him peaking
around corners at me.
But, I will get through this.
Time does heal all wounds.
Eventually. One Day when I think of him, I’ll smile and say to myself,
“Max Was A Good Dog,” granting our pooch the highest praise his species can earn.
“Dogs are one of Gods most perfect creations.
Their only flaw is they don’t live long enough.”
“It’s been said that Dogs don’t go to Heaven.
If true, when I die, I want to go where dogs go.”
“People bury people because they have to.
People bury dogs because they WANT TO!”
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader, his god.
He will be yours, faithful and true,
to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion”
