My baby girl….
Imagine… you have a stray dog in your front yard, ‘oh great’ a FEMALE dog, she is timid and won’t come to you but refuses to leave your front yard where your own two male dogs in your back yard on the other side of the fence.
One day it is raining about 2 weeks in to her appearance, you don’t want to take in another dog, especially a female…. well dam ok entice her over to eat, grab her bring her in and bath her, decide shes at home and sigh…. smile…all the while the big brown eyes look at you! Ok keeping her inside and planning to make the trip to the vet to get her spayed all on track.. waiting on payday and vet appointment……several weeks in notice something strange going on oooohhhh noo shit waited too long, she’s pregnant uhhggg well ok swallow hard so whats a few pups we can find good homes..ok count down all the while falling in love with her big brown eyes and her leaning her head on you or that playful mood.
Time passes she get bigger and bigger jeez can she get any bigger…. just about time.. starring down at her and saying under your breath hope all goes well girl you are a small dog and big time pregnant. She looks at you like yea I know and pleads for relief while her belly begins to slightly drag the ground when she walks… here goes. We began to prepare her a box old sheets, towels and the day comes shes in labor but surprisingly shes doesn’t seem to show any bad signs, there goes one, two oh look they look like red or blue heelers, three, four, five, ok she seems to have it all under control off to bed I go. Morning comes and jump up running down to count OH my there are EIGHT, WOW, all look healthy, however there is one in which a day later we buried him outside.
She is about the best mommy dog ever very protective except with my family, nice. Looking at her being sucked to death by all seven and looking at the pups. Now wait a minute that one sorta looks like WHAT…… they all start growing and as they grow they have there own personalities the largest is the most whiniest loud mouth crier, and about half look like your own dog in your back yard, so you are going how was that possible, no they couldn’t be but they look just like him how did she get pregnant through the fence, no had to be a stray…… well puppies are being weaned and finding homes, neighbor chose the big one alright got rid of the cry baby!! ……Dam they brought him back and chose another one,
they ended up naming him Stuart.
Well the day comes all pups have other homes and finally off to the vet right away this time. While at the vets ask about her age and he simply said she is about three years old….Spaying done and back home recovering fine all is well, learning more and more about my new baby… on one walking trip, I’m standing waiting for her to do her business and it’s dark outside here comes someone, my timid little girl jumps in front of me and begins a low growl, well that made me feel pretty good to have her on my side, turned out just a neighbor looking for his own dog that got out…
Fully recovered from her spaying surgery its off you go to the back yard to run like the wind with the other two dogs, oh my she is in doggy heaven. For the next six years she is a handful and a joy, shes my baby…I tried to remember that while standing in the front yard with a newspaper in my hand cursing under my breath saying I’m gonna wring you neck when I get a hold of you. You see she’s a digger and loves to dig out…..Time and time again chasing waiting and enticing her back, finally realizing I can bribe her with a trip in the car so every time she gets out just open the car door and she jumps right in, well until the day comes and shes on to your little stunt….more cursing…. OK have to find another way fixing the fence every time isn’t working shes way too smart for that… Bingo “I got it” we installed an electric doggy fence, sigh of relief she finds out she can’t get close to the fence and dig out with out getting shocked ok it is mean but hey I will never tie a dog up and not let them run besides she is safe in her yard.
On several occasions looking over and talking to the neighbors dog (Sadie’s pup) Stuart who by now has got to be six years old, and noticing him sitting sideways looking just like your other dog that you still think might have been the father of the her litter of pups. She was a cheerleader of sorts the other male dogs would fight on occasion and she literally looked like a cheerleader bouncing around both of them, darn if only I could understand bark language!!!
Every time I go outside she had that look in her eye always ready to play, that was her thing me standing looking at her and her head down eyes up on you pleading to give chase with her front chest down legs out front flat and rear end up in the air ready to dart, you jump at her or began to chase and its all on!! Out into the yard big circle and back fast enough by you close but not close enough for you to grab her she circles and looks at you like com’on chase me… and I think dam should of named her Gingerbread man (you cant catch me I’m the Gingerbread man). she loved to running and oh yea dig oh my goodness if only I could have trained her to dig correctly I could have had my in ground pool dug by now, but no instead I have half a dozen, ankle busting, lawn mower mishaps half way to China in my back yard….
After shaking finger, newspapers and whatever else I could at her for digging out running off not coming to me when she gets out eventually I get her… tail between legs looking at me with the big brown worried but not so worried eyes hell who can spank her while she does that… pat her on the head and her tail wags all is right with the world again…..thinking about all those times she laid on the sofa with her head on your lap or burrow in under what ever cover is
on the sofa in the winter.
Now looking back what I wouldn’t give to have you dig out one more time, squat down and look at me pleading “chase me chase me” or dig another freaking crater in the back yard…. I will forever keep you in my heart and miss you……..
I love you Sadie
