I knew when I woke in the middle
of the night, that something
about you wasn’t quite right.
You lay there breathing in a slow,
shallow pace, not moving a muscle
in your body or whisker on your face.
When morning came and
you weren’t patiently waiting
in your favorite space,
I something bad was about to take place.
Putting the morning routine
on hold I sat down beside you,
stroked your soft fur,
kissed your sweet face,
I told you how much joy
you have given me,
even told you how sad
I would be with you gone
to start your new life in
that very special place.
Despite your weak body,
your will was still there,
you made one last trip to the kitchen,
and collapsed on the floor.
I lifted your tired body,
placed you gently in bed letting
the palm of my hand cradle your head.
You clung to life for the longest time,
but still weren’t ready to leave
this life behind.
As I carried you to the truck,
the tears began to flow
knowing deep down side
I didn’t want you to go.
The house seems so empty
without you here,
everywhere I look I see you there,
on the floor waiting patiently,
for the morning feed, the couch,
your favorite chair,
even the window
basking in the warm Summer air.
Rest in peace my girl,
you’ve lived a great life, and yes,
you may be gone from my eyes
but the memories of you
I will cherish for life.
With all our love,
