On April 29, 2002, I came across a small, scared little Shih Tzu at the Clinton County Humane Society in Clinton, Iowa, whose previous owner could no longer take care of him.
Immediately my heart went out to him and we bonded instantly when he curled up in my lap and fell asleep.
He had a name from his previous owner but I renamed him Tulsa. I could not bring him home for two weeks so I went to the Humane Society every day to take him outside for a walk, bring him treats and cuddle with him.
What followed was more than 13 years of friendship that took us from Iowa to Milwaukee to Seattle to Illinois. We were together during good times and bad, during which Tulsa stood by me with unconditional love and affection. Tulsa loved people and generated so many smiles during his lifetime.
Sadly, our time together on this earth could not last forever as Tulsa went to go live with God. He leaves behind his doggie brothers (Oscar and Virgil), countless people whose day he brightened, a family who loved him and me, his daddy who loved him so very much and will miss him every minute of every hour of every day.
Because of Tulsa there was a Franklin. Because of Tulsa there is an Oscar and a Virgil. Because of Tulsa there are many friendships I would not have made otherwise.
I did not rescue Tulsa … Tulsa rescued me …
Sleep well baby boy … you were very much loved and you will be missed … the next time we meet, we will never have to say goodbye again …
With Love,
