Retriever

I had been feeling very poorly and worked at the local

medical center in the emergency room. I had a hospital apartment behind

the hospital and the x-ray students lived upstairs in this two family house.

Anyway Shamous used to go up and visit the girls all the time because

I always left my kitchen door open and the the girls always left the

one bedroom door open. The girls used to come down all the time to watch

cable tv or use my stove. Basically it was like a dorm for them up there

so there was no stove.

Anyway I was at a point that I was so sick I didn’t get out of bed all day.

Shamous must have sensed how sick I was because he went

upstairs and sat in the doorway and barked.

I could hear the girls calling to him to come in; but he wouldn’t.

He would just go halfway down the stairs and back up again and sit in

the doorway and bark. Finally after about five or ten minutes of this

the girls finally thought something might be wrong because my car was

outside but the lights were all out and it was really dark.

I could hear them coming down the stairs calling my name; but I

couldn’t talk because I could hardly breathe.

Finally they came into the bedroom and got me over to the hospital.

After a very short term of being intubated and quickly extubated after a few hours

one of the doctors that I work with came over and told me ten minutes later

getting there and I would have been DEAD.

If it was not for Shamous’s persistence and the girls following him

down the stairs I wouldn’t be hear to share this story with you.

He saved my life and everyone says that.

Our hospital emergency room where I work made him a hero for the day.

So when it that dreadful day finally came it was easy for me.

He had a massive stroke and my vet who I work part-time for said to me

you can keep alive with alot of medication; but he will never be the same

and at that point Shamous looked up at me almost to say “its time”.

So I made that decision and held him in my arms while Dr. Mead put him to

sleep and I have his ashes in a beautiful urn and Shamous will be buried

with me when it is my time to meet him at the Rainbow Bridge!!!

I loved that dog and still do and there will never be another like him;

however I now have four more goldens and I love them all very much;

but Shamous will always have that special place in my heart .
