Shepherd / Lab
I often wonder how a mutt saved from the local dog pound
could become such an important part of a family’s life.
That was before I adopted “Shane” a shepherd/lab mix.
From the first day he arrived at our home we knew he was special.
Shane grew to be a 90 pound bundle of love.
All the neighbors knew him fed him and loved him.
My day was complete when I arrived home from a long day of work
and I saw his wet nose pressed up against the window his tail
wagging furiously.
The years passed and “Shane” grew up with my children.
How they played! It was only within the last year that we noticed
signs of failure his walk had slowed and arthritis took its toll on his
once firm strong body. The vet suspected a cancer tumor but knowing
his advanced age the family decided that no extreme measures
would be taken.
It was Saturday when the major change in Shane occurred.
He became disoriented could not walk and would not eat.
When he collapsed on the kitchen floor we rushed him to the vet.
His bright eyes never left mine.
At 9:45 PM my best friend took his final breath…
as I held his head in my hands I kissed his nose and told him
that I loved him.
Shane died quietly with family by his side…
What a comfort it is to know that he is no longer in pain
that he romps free as he did years ago and one day…
I will once again see that wet nose and wagging tail…
Until then….
“We love you Shane”.
