LUCY by Carol Glass / Mommy

Lucy came to me as a puppy from the North Shore Animal Shelter, her given name was “Jesse”. The name did not fit, we renamed her “Lupe”, then to my daughters objections to Lupe, she became LUCY. She was sweet, lovable and “goofy”. She was oh, so sweet, kind and loving. She was filled with love and just a little bit “loopy”. She would turn her head and rap her nose into the wall, go under the coffee table,
stand up and lift it.

She wanted to go out, at least, 100 times a day (7 weeks old). “Loopy”, that’s what she really was as a pup. She would come back in, 101 times in a day and kiss everyone to let them know she was back. We would yell “INCOMING” as she entered. She became the protector of the home, the sweetheart of the family. She would sit on me, whether I was on the sofa or floor, sit on the back of the sofa
(thought she was a cat) I had 2 cats.

One night in March, Lucy went out for the 99th time of the day, when she came back she had a “thing” in her mouth, she dropped it, I stepped back and asked, “Luce, what the heck is that?” (it was a 3 day old shivering kitten),and then it started to meow. It fit into my palm, I dried it placed it under a lamp, then wrapped it in a washcloth and fed it water through an eyedropper. I took “Baby” to the Vet in the morning, got her on formula and learned the proper care for her. Mama Lucia watched over the process of raising Baby, when she cried, “Mama Lucia” came to me, went to the refrigerator to remind me”time to eat”, after the meal Lucy cleaned her (all 6 ozs)Baby crawled up to her for warmth
(in later weeks)Oh MY!

Lucy was a true born protector. Baby was constipated and crying, Lucy licked her anal glands to stimulate them to work. Lucy ALWAYS looked after Baby. MY GOD you surely look after the helpless.

One year later Russell (cat #4 came) Russell followed Lucy everywhere she went, kissed her, rubbed on her and slept with her(he did not particularly like people, no matter how kind) Cats 1(Griz) and 2 (Sparky) did not particularly take anything more than tolerance of the Lucy. Cat #5 Waco, was downright mean to her, nipping and clawing. Lucy was tolerant, bit at the air, never the cat. I was amazed at how wonderful she was. Lucy died on May 20th, 2004, she was preceded by Griz, then Sparky and then her Baby.

The day Lucy passed, Russell went to her dish, took 2 kibbles to her bed and layed them there for her and layed down, he looks for her and sleeps on her bed. He looks at me with a GREAT sadness. I am sure he knows and I am amazed at his strength. Lucy was his “girl”, she was mine too. I cry a lot, however, I am relieved, because her pain was so great and now its gone.

It does not make me miss her any less, she lived a life to serve us all in her love, compassion and caring. I do not know that many 2 legged creatures with her attributes. Next time you deal with another 2 legger, think about my LUCY, her love and unselfishness! There are not that many people in this world that can compare. God Bless and Take Care Of You LUCY, in the same manner you took care of others.
Till We Meet Again.

With All My Love,
LUCY
