Major by Vicki Manker / Vicki

I am writing this story on behalf of my best friend, Florence who lost her beloved Sheltie, Major just after New Year 2005. Major was a dog that was loved by his family of 2 grown children and his Dad, Phil and his Mom, Florence. Six years ago, Phil became very sick and
quickly died from cancer.

Major was his devoted companion and never left his side especially when he was sick. Major grieved greatly for Phil for a very long time but was a constant strength for Florence. A few weeks ago Florence became very sick and had to go to the hospital for a couple days. For the weeks prior to that, Major was waking her several times each night and she thought that he needed to go outside as he was getting older and couldn’t wait. She got up and took him out each time.

Her hospital stay proved that she had severe sleep apnea. We are convinced that Major was waking her when she stopped breathing in order to help her. After she received her oxygen over two weeks ago, Major only woke twice and both times
her oxygen had been disconnected.

How many times did this dog save her life? We will never know! Last week he awoke during the night and she checked her oxygen and it was all right. He went outside and then returned to bed. A couple hours later he awoke again crying and unable to get up.

His health had been going down hill but we think he hung on because he knew he had to help Florence. He now knew, somehow, that she would be all right and I guess his will to live was gone. He was put to sleep peacefully and Florence’s angel on earth went on to heaven to be with his Dad. How can this precious dog ever be thanked for what he did on this earth? I guess the answer is, he saved his Mom’s life and that was his reward and his thanks.

He was the most gentle and loving dog ever. He spent his last three weeks with his Mom because she was unable to work. They had their last time together and then this wonderful creature knew that he was tired out and that his fight was over. Rest in peace, Major, and know that you were very loved by your Mom and by me too.

Many people were better people because of you and your love. Thank you dear friend for being you. I can still see your beautiful face and your one ear up and one ear down. Your eyes were so full of love and your expression was always kind.
I never saw you get angry or upset with anyone.

I am so glad to have been able to be a part of your life. How many times did you bark when you saw me come outside with my dogs? You were always glad to see me. Thank you for saving your Mom’s life and now I know you are at peace and that you are young again and all your hurt is gone. You were loved very much here on this earth and I know your life is beginning all over again and you are with Phil.

Good bye, dear friend.
I will ALWAYS remember you,

Love,
Major
