Some stories about our loving pets just need to be shared for our own sake if nothing more. On a cold clear morning February 9th 2003 I was handed a small cat carrier in a Dunkin Doughnuts parking lot. Inside was a tiny gray one eyed cat with mottled fur laying on his side suffering from an upper respiratory infection, a sinus infection, and his one eye crusted over with the tip of his tounge sticking out of his mouth. The shelter care taker gave me a bag of meds, a hug, a thank you, and a note about the 6 hour regiment of administering the medicine; how the shelter just wasn’t equipped for the 24/7 care he needed. They did not expect him to last the night. After six weeks of constant care, emerging from his new larger cage isolated from the other two cats came a beautiful sleek coated prancing gray kitty.
For the next seven years he was the gentlest most loving lap cat I have ever had with me. He never fully “well”” with bouts of sinus and respiratory infections, a constant issue. But, he was an amazing creature who spent most of his time in my lap. When cancer finally took the place of infection and weight loss reduced him to a couple of pounds on New Years Eve of 2009 and nine the vet and I decided enough suffering was enough as I held him my precious One-Eyed-Jack crossed to the other side. He was my third rescue, ten more followed, six are still here. But, his courage and loving nature made him stand out from all the rest.
