I first met Holly at the Humane Society on Oct. 21, 2005. They weren’t open yet, but they let me go back and look at the dogs. They were still cleaning their pens and Holly (known as Mabel at the time) was temporarily tied up at the end. I walked over there, looked down at her and she looked up at me. She had the sweetest, caring brown eyes I had ever seen. She was so skinny and had very bad skin. She had flakes all over her. She really didn’t look very good, but those eyes. I said to her, Well, you’re kinda cute and then the person there cleaning asked me if I wanted to go into a room with her, which I did. She seemed so happy, but oh so skinny. There was a brush in the room, so I started to try to brush some of the flakes off, but it only created more.
I fell in love in that very instant that I looked into her eyes. I immediately filled out the adoption application and paid for her. However, I wanted my husband to come and meet her before we brought her home. When he got off work, we went back and they brought her out and he said, “That’s the dog you want?”” She didn’t look very good, but I know she could be beautiful with some love and care. We took her home and she instantly became comfortable in our house. She was a big girl, only 5 months old, but probably 60 pounds or so. We fed her well and cleaned her up and her skin no longer flaked. She was silly and goofy.
