The mare trotted into my field. I looked up and smiled.
I didn’t mind I always let new horses come in.
I went back to work. Later that day I went into the field.
I felt a strange feeling as I neared the new mare standing alone.
She took a step towards me. I reached out to pet her.
Suddenly her ears went back and she bared her teeth.
I took yet another step towards her. She was now stamping her hoof.
But I didn’t care. I kept walking towards her.
I knew she wouldn’t hurt me.
When I was at her side I leaned my neck against her.
She swiveled her ears forward her teeth were no longer bared.
I knew she wouldn’t hurt me. Then I left her.
The next day I walked into the field and watched the horses.
The mare was eying the “leader” of all my horses.
He walked over to her and she yet again put her ears back
and bared her teeth. He didn’t move.
He must’ve known that she wouldn’t hurt him.
As the weeks went by I grew to love the mare.
I name her the Lone One.
She would put her ears back when ever I or the Leader
neared her. But she never hurt us.
It was nearly a year before she ran away.
I went looking for her and found her dead in the woods.
I fled home and cried into the Leader’s mane.
He seemed to have known this was going to happen he stood still.
I put all the horses in their stalls and went outside.
I lay down on my back in the field and fell asleep.
I woke up with the sun shining down on me. It was just rising.
I looked up into the golden clouds and saw something.
Was the light playing tricks on me?
I thought I saw a winged black horse.
I rubbed my eyes and looked up.
It was gone.
Must have been my imagination.
Or was it…..?
