Buster was a Boxer yet he wasn’t.
He never put up much of a fight from when he wandered into
the yard until death pulled him into the ring eight years later.
I spent the weekend at a friend’s house and when I arrived
Sunday night my parents were nervous because our old dog was
lethargic like a Shepherd they had got before he passed away.
On Monday the vet drew some blood.
Buster’s kidneys and liver were a bit low but his
main problem was anemia.
The vet injected him and put him on steroid pills we
were to give him three times daily.
That was battle one with death.
A few weeks later I was getting ready for school.
I was just about to walk out the door when housebroken Buster urinated
right there beside me. My mom suspected and I quote “Big problems.”
We took him in that afternoon where he received another
steroid injection and more tablets with another three times
daily set of instructions. Battle no. 2.
Just after I left eighth grade for the summer Buster got so sick that
he was shaking listless and only eating when pestered.
This led up to the last heroic effort to prolong things.
Same treatment as before. That was Monday.
Tuesday no improvement shaking barely eating incontinence.
Wednesday we decided to euthanize him that afternoon provided there
was no improvement. But since he ate a little more than usual
and went outside without being carried we gave him 24 more
hours for improvement.
Thursday rolled around with no change.
At least not for the better.
Our vet was not in so I gave him a final pig ear as he was
a junk food addict until the end and we made a
forty-five minute drive to another office.
The vet gave him a sedative.
When we saw that he was no longer suffering we left as the vet
administered the fatal solution.
If anyone is considering euthanasia here are some tips.
1. If your financial and emotional budget can survive exhaust all efforts to help your pet.
2. Remember quality of life not quantity should be the main issue.
3. If everything fails you may want to give an extra day just to be sure,
provided the animal is somewhat comfortable.
4. Make your decision based on what is best for the pet not you.
You were a good boy Buster.
