When we got Mariah and her sister Nestleigh from my aunt

there was something special about them than any other

dogs I’d ever had.

Perhaps because they were sisters perhaps because they were

just so darn cute.. or maybe because they were both the

shy ones of the litter.

As we grew older they grew with us… they would both follow

closely behind us as my sister and I went riding on our horses

they would sit in the truck bed together when we went

to town… they had 660 blessed acres to

call home.. Forever.

Mariah and Nestleigh were more than the loving type of dog..

they were born with that natural discipline.. that natural

angelic composure… the natural depth in their heart that made

loving someone so endless.

We suffered a tragedy last August and lost Mariah to

Rat poison/ and barbiturates…

There were a lot of barn fires happening in our area we own

a large horse facility out here and the dogs were kind of like our

guard against that. Neighbors remember a man in a black

chevy throwing something out the window at the end of our driveway..

The investigations revealed pork chops filled with poison…

Amazing what someone will do just to ruin something…

Mariah was the spirit in all of us..

always there to guide us and love us..

she brought out the best in the rainy days and still

never hesitated to follow us on horseback,

in the coldest of winter.

She was loyal and a real companion…

Her love for us was something that we would have never known

had we not heard her barking late late that night..

I looked out the window and noticed that everytime she

barked at Nestleigh (who was tempting to go out the driveway)

she would howl and whine until Ness came back a few feet..

doing this all night as if she knew what she had consumed

and didn’t want to see her sister fall to that fate.

She became unable to walk (we didn’t know anything had even gone on)

she was dizzy… couldn’t walk without falling over…

we had her put to sleep… one of our other shepherds (holly vaughn)

fell to that same fate the next day…

she had gone where Ness wasn’t allowed to go… and here I was

off work for a week at the vet 2 times a day 4 hours every visit..

trying to persuade holly (who was in a coma) to fight for her life,

and come back to us.

The endless hours the suffering.. all of the pain.. it’s as equal

to someone losing a child.

Holly and Ness are daily reminders of Mariah’s love.

They have her same brown eyes… Ness is her blood…

and even though she’s gone I still feel her closeness at night

by the foot of my bed.

Though we miss her dearly we know she’s resting in a holy place

where pain is no more.

She’s free from the bounds of hate and sorrow on earth.

And she’s waiting for us… at Rainbow Bridge.
