BANDIT by Bruce and Julie / Mommy and Daddy Schneider

Bandit came to us unexpectedly the year before we married. His owners lived in an apartment that proved too small to hold such a large hearted and eager puppy. His “puppy” years lasted well into his ninth and tenth years. Always trying to be “the end and the all”, it took us by surprise when he started creeping instead of scurrying.
Then those big brown eyes overflowing with pools of love,
became milky overnight, I swear.

We have four cats and two canaries so Bandit became accustomed to keeping the peace in the pecking order. He had a seizure on Feb. 13, 2003, and bloodwork showed he was at the beginning of renal failure. We learned how to do the subcutaneous fluids(under skin surface)from the vet staff, and did them at home.

Thinking of it now, I wonder if I could of been a trooper like Bandit. He actually gave up all fears and worries and allowed me to take over. Now I understand what it means to be responsible for another’s life, even though they’re not my biological offspring.

On Tues., August 12, 2003, I came home from work and saw that Bandit was no longer interested in participating on his surroundings. My coaxing to eat and drink were turned away. There was a message from the vet with the latest bloodwork results-but I knew before I heard her that the end was near. In my wildest dreams I didn’t think that T-H-A-T was the day. We coaxed Bandit out on the back deck, where the summer night sounds were awesome…
as if the night was serenading Bandit.

There was a full moon, cool and no bugs out-(strange). Our vet finally came after delivering 9 puppies, and prepared us for Bandit’s farewell. I held Bandit as his body became limp, and as he sprang into eternity, I knew that he was a puppy once more chasing butterflies. I know your near to me .Alot of people ask if I’m gonna get a new puppy. ARRRGGHHHH
