In Loving Memory
Beau “Buddy” Endlich
May 3 1996 —- April 13 1999
My beloved Buddy Beau the Greatest Dane
It was May 3rd 1996 and my friend called me at 5am. Belle is having
her puppies and since I have never seen such a blessed event I was
excited to get there. Three puppies were born and I was thrilled. My
friend had to give a riding lesson so she left me with Belle and the
soon to born remaining puppies. Not long and No.4 arrived. I did what
I needed to do to help Belle and her puppy. A few hours passed and
Belle was exhausted but there was one more puppy yet to be born.
It appeared to be too large for an exhausted mama so I had to do my best
and try to deliver her baby. He was the largest of Belle’s little ones
and I found myself pulling and pushing to help poor Belle. Soon I had
actually delivered the puppy!!!! I was surprised that I was able to do
it. I even helped Belle clean him up and take care of him. I set him
down with his brothers and sisters and let him nurse.
Well my friend was shocked that I did this so well that she gave Beau
to me. I had already named him as I held him in my arms anyway.
Every day I visited her and took Beau and held him.
I fell in love with him at his first breath!!!
When we finally brought him home he was such a clumsy guy.
His feet were too big for him and he was always tumbling over them.
How he grew!!! In a few months he grew into those big paws.
On his first birthday I made him a meat loaf cake and we videotaped the whole
3 seconds it took him to devour it. I remember enrolling him in
obedience class at 4 months of age and he was the biggest guy there.
The instructor said he was too young and not real smart. Boy was she
wrong!!! Beau could twist open any doorknob knew where his crackers
were understood the things we asked him to do and even knew his
bedtime. You could set your clock for 8:30pm because Beau would pace
twice around the house and then jump up on our bed and go to sleep.
He snored as loud and even sometimes louder than my husband.
On April 13th 1999 Beau’s companion a beagle of ours named Rosey
broke out he door. He took off after her when he heard a truck up the
road. He managed to get her safely across and into the yard but my
sweet buddy didn’t run quite fast enough this time.
He didn’t feel any pain or suffer any visible injuries. He was still in
a running position when we reached him and had already left his world.
My grief is immeasurable as I cannot believe I’ll not be able to feel
his fur or see his joy when I get home from work.
When my husband works nights Beau’s side of the bed is empty and cold.
His collar is under my pillow.
We buried my buddy on the top of the hill where the sun
always shines and he can see forever.
A cross stands at the side of the road where he laid.
Will I ever have another like him? No he was the one unique Beau.
I know that someday I’ll be on the bridge and calling “Hi Buddy.
How’s my big guy?” and he’ll meet me as we will journey through
our next life together again.
I love you Beau and admire your courage and bravery.
I will miss you forever and grieve for now.
Rosey misses you and so does the rest of your family.
Watch over us my big guy.
This is in memory of the Greatest Dane I know-my buddy,
my friend my big guy-the dog I love and miss.
