I stare into twilight and see you..
head up with the wind blowing in the grass,
with tail held high, and eyes trained on what I as yet did not see…
Knowingly you settle into the earth,
with head up ready to dash,
as you took in the smells around, then you looked straight at me.
Lying there looking and taking in the wind
I could not help but think you knew it would be,
time for you to take the journey we all would like to miss,
time to begin, to discover what lays past the shadow of death.
I stare harder to see you now,
to remember you sniffing the air,
to see you race after squirrel or sound,
I look each day foul or fair,
and each night before I sleep
and there for a fleeting moment you are,
then you fade from where you came, and I weep.
It is my hope that when we all take our journey into the light
that you will be there with your trusting gaze,
you’re look so loyal,
and eyes so bright,
laying in the earth with head up
and taking in the wind in the grass,
and you’ll be waiting for me.
