Collie
Duncan was a fabulous dog.
He loved to run he loved the beach
he LOVED yellow VW Bugs and he loved me.
He HATED thunderstorms with a passion.
He'd cry and cower.
He wasn't thrilled with the Boston subway system either
but he dealt with it well.
We got him from the Angel Memorial shelter in Boston the day
I found out I had failed the test to get into Boston Latin High.
Duncan had been at the shelter for awhile and was just about out of time.
He was a loving protective and forgiving friend.
I wasn't always too nice to him but he always forgave me and he always loved me.
I think he knew how angry I was even though I didn't.
Who says dogs are dumb?
Duncan died from heartworm a couple of years later.
Our vet had told us that city dogs wouldn't get heartworm
so we had never put him on the medication.
One night he woke us up. He was coughing up blood.
We rushed him to the vet even though it was 3 a.m.
Right before the vet carried him away!
he came up to me and looked into my eyes.
I remember hugging him.
As the vet carried him away up the stairs
I remember him looking down at us. He was saying goodbye.
I never saw him again. I'm older and a lot wiser now
and I realize just how wonderful a friend Duncan was.
I was lucky to have him. Very very lucky.
The greatest gift he gave me was forgiveness.
I'll always be grateful that he understood me better than I did
and that we had that last minute together.
Thanks Duncan for everything.
I love you.
