On January 23rd of 2009 we had our beloved Dusty neutered at 7 months old at Country Roads Veterinary Services in Stoystown, Pa. I could not take him because I had work but my boyfriend had taken him. This was the first time he was seen by this vet. They immediately gave him an anesthetic without weighing him and checking his vitals because he was mean. So they injected without knowing how much he weighed and how much to give him. We did have our other vet send his records but they were from 4 months prior. And he had grown a lot since that time. Then after they neutered him they sent him home with my boyfriend in a box while he was still asleep.

On February 16th of 2009 I took my Persian Dusty for a check up because I was worried about him. He was grinding his teeth and drinking excessive amounts of water. Although, he was only 7 months old I was worried about kidney problems. This time I took him in a carrier. The vet said since he was mean he’d have to use an anesthetic to draw blood from him. He did not take him out of the pet carrier to administer the anesthetic. Instead, he tipped the pet carrier and put the needle through a hole in the carrier and jabbed Dusty. Once again, he did not weigh him or check his vitals. Then ten minutes later he came in and saw Dusty was still awake so he got another needle and stabbed him again. He said he must not have got enough in him the last time. So that immediately worried me. Then he told me to go wait in the waiting room he’d be done shortly. About an hour later the vet came out and told me Dusty had died.

I freaked and immediately asked if it was because of the anesthetic. He said no he could have given him twice the dose that he had gave him. So he opened him up to see what happened. He said my cat had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopahy which is a heart disease that causes thickening on the left side. He said that caused him to have cardiac arrest. So I took Duty’s heart to another vet in Somerset, Pa to have them observe it as well. They confirmed that he did have the disease but it could have been caught. If that vet would have taken my cats vitals he could have heard his heartbeat beating too fast or he could have had a heart murmur.

These things would have told him not to give my cat an anesthetic and he still might be here today. And from my research something as little as getting blood work does not call for putting a cat under. My prior vet had no trouble handling him. This vet was scared to touch him while he was awake. So I think his recklessness and negligence led to the death of my little buddy.

He was my little buddy and I miss him terribly. I filed a complaint with the state on the veterinarian.

Love always,
Dusty
