We never expected it…even now we still can’t believe he’s gone…
On May 28 1998 my husband and I had gone to a shelter where we fell in
love with an adorable gray and white kitten. We brought him home and he
was given the name Dusty. He gave us so much joy and became fast
friends with Missy our other cat. He slumbered on our laps. He would
lovingly groom Missy. In return she would groom his gray fur that was
as smooth as velvet. At night he often slept in his own little bed,
and when he was awake we would hear him chasing his favorite ball.
When October arrived he turned eight-months. We were looking forward to
celebrating his one year-old birthday but unknowing to us that wasn’t
going to happen. On the 5th of October I noticed Dusty could hardly
breathe. A few days before he hardly ate or drank. He stopped his
favorite things like sleeping on our laps and playing with Missy. So
when I saw him not able to breathe I knew something was terribly wrong.
That night we rushed him to the vet thinking he just had an infection.
To our surprise he had an incurable heart disease. The time had come
to make the decision we weren’t at all prepared for. We didn’t want to
say good-bye to our gray and white friend but we had to. After we said
our good-byes and he had gone to cat heaven the vet gave us his blue
collar. We were devastated thinking it unfair that he died so young.
Now I look at his collar his pictures and say to myself at least we
gave him the companionship that so many animals need…
at least we gave him five months of love.
