Emma my beloved little furry friend was put down today at 11h00. Her condition deteriorated over the weekend and she was in a lot of pain, hyperventilating and shivering. It was the kindest thing to do. She was covered in skin lesions and could no longer eat anything but Weetbix with hot milk. She was a wonderful little friend to me and the children when they were young. She liked to wander – but her happiest days were spent in the valley where she hunted down all sorts of interesting critters and would return home covered in mud with tail wagging.
Before I met her, she had been abused by a strange woman who was trying to sell her on the White Bridge and had her enclosed cruelly in a tiny cage. She was taken away by the SPCA. From there, an elderly lady with severe osteoporosis adopted her, but could not cope with Emma’s vibrance and energy. It was from Eve this dear lady that I was given Emma.
In the valley, she fought for her life after either a baboon or a Lynx got hold of her and bit her badly. She was found lying bleeding profusely at the side of the dirt road by one of the residents of the valley and kindly taken to the vet where her life was spared but I was warned that she might never walk again. Emma put up the fight of her life and she walked again, though a little lop-sidedly, but she was fine.
She subsequently took a turn for the worst last winter and stopped enjoying her walks and aged very quickly. Now, a year later, she has gone to Heaven. I am thankful that she is out of her suffering. It was time. Thank you Emma for being such a wonderful friend who even this morning wagged her tail when I greeted her…
You can never be replaced,
