Border Collie
While working at a local non profit animal shelter I answered a
call from our city shelter to pick up a dog that had been adopted from
our shelter. When I arrived at the shelter to pick up Joe an eight
month old beagle mix I was asked if we had room for one more.
Just then a shelter worker was walking an older border collie
to the chamber. My shelter contact pointed to the dog and
explained that she was on her way to the euthanasia chamber,
but she was really sweet and would make someone a great pet.
Once I looked into her eyes I knew she had to have that chance.
She and Joe were loaded into my car and off we went to
their haven. Once we arrived at the shelter I explained why I had
returned with two dogs thankfully everyone understood.
That was the last time I saw the 6 year old border collie named
Lady for several months.
Sometime later once again I saw those soulful eyes that had
tugged on my heartstrings several months before.
I asked around and discovered that Lady had been returned
after two months in her new home.
Apparently she didn’t get along with the homes other dog.
Lady sat at the shelter for several weeks.
No one seemed to be interested in a 6 year old border collie with
such sad eyes. I decided that she would be the perfect dog for
my parents. That next weekend I brought her to my parents house
“just for today” I insisted. Unfortunately my parents were not as
taken by Lady as I was they hadn’t fallen in love.
But by this point I had! I brought Lady home with me and told
my husband all about her and my plan to make her my parents dog.
Once again I asked can we keep her “just for today”.
That day turned into the most wonderful five years of our lives.
My shelter contact was right she did make someone a
wonderful pet me.
I lost Lady to cancer on November 4 1999.
It was the worst day of my life. Lady was my best friend my
companion my soul mate. She loved and was loved more than
anyone I have ever known.
I can’t explain how much Lady is missed.
All I can say is I would do just about anything to have her back
“just for today”.
