Until we meet again, Marley, Rest in Peace Dear Friend
I will remember you, will you remember me?
I will remember…how happy you were to see us when we arrived.
I will remember how, even though your old body ached, you danced to greet us.
I will remember how you kissed my face so softly.
I will remember how gently you took a treat from me.
I will remember how happy you were with your stuffed kong and pile o’ bones.
I will remember the pain I now feel knowing your trusting brown eyes and smiling face will no longer greet us at the shelter.
Marley, I want to apologize for the humans that bred you without a thought for if you would be structurally sound and able to move without pain. I want to apologize for the humans that didn’t teach you the skills you needed to grow up to be a well-socialized boy. I want to apologize for the humans that discarded you. The humans that you waited for day after day and you longed to see again, even though they did not deserve your loyalty. We don’t know what happened to you before you came to us…we can only imagine.
We gave you love, shelter, good food, yummy treats and we trusted you. I hope you knew you were loved. We will all miss you, dear Marley. And I hope someday, we will all get to greet you at the Bridge where you will run free, pain free and worry-free my boy. And I know you will still have a stock pile o’bones at the Bridge and never-ending supply of stuffed Kongs.
I think I can speak for all the volunteers that worked with you, Marley, we loved you and we will miss you but we are better people for having known you. You showed us what loyalty looks like and what perseverance through the pain looks like. You showed us what forgiveness looks like as well. We will honor you by helping your shelter mates find their forever homes as that is all we can bear to do, Marley. It is what will get us through this difficult time.
Godspeed, safe passage my beloved Marley…..you were loved and you are missed by Denise, Tom O and All The Volunteers….those that did everything in their power to give Marley the love he deserved (the kennel workers, adoption counselors, those that stuffed his kongs for him, those that walked him, that transported him from the kill shelter, the fosters he had and especially to those that accompanied him on his final journey and gave him the final act of unselfish love) and his shelter mates (Diana, Deets, Lucy, Smokey, and Lucah)
In the Arms of The Angels May You Find Some Comfort There
