Michaela, I remember when I brought you home. I kept you in my room for several weeks of quarantine. I had Cassie, another gerbil, so you needed to be quarantined. I remember when I moved your tank into the room with the ‘big girls’ – Cassie gerbil, Tulip guinea pig, Buffy guinea pig,
and Ginger guinea pig.
You fit in just fine with my little fur family. You lived in a large tank with a tank topper. You had lots of litter, cardboard, and sometimes hay to enjoy in the tank. Your food, water bottle, and wheel were up in the topper. My, how you enjoyed yourself. I remember watching you kick the litter around. All I could see at times was the litter flying. You would make nests for sleeping. In the evenings you would go up into the topper for quality wheel running time. You were a nippy gerbil, but I would wear a glove so I could pet you. I sometimes took you into the bathroom so you could run around and stretch your little legs.
A little over a week ago you began breathing heavily. I knew our time together was growing short. You were 2 ½ years old, elderly in gerbil time. I removed the topper and put your food and water in the tank so you wouldn’t
have to run up the ramp.
Even though you were nearing the end of your little life, you still noticed me when I stopped by the tank and talked to you. Even yesterday you were eating, drinking, and noticing me. Your little eyes were clear and bright.
This morning it was time for you to pass on. I was with you at the end. I told you it was okay to go to the Rainbow Bridge. Say hello to the critters when you see them.
Love,
