Midnight by Steve & Lynn Ruskin / Daddy & Mommy

Midnight we are writing this to on your first anniversary at The Rainbow Bridge. I can’t believe a full year has passed since I last held you in my arms. We got Midnight as a 5 week old puppy when his litter was turned into the shelter. He took to us right away and grew up so fast right before our eyes. Before we knew it he was 60 pounds full of muscle.

Midnight was a very smart dog even though he never had formal obedience training. Besides the usual sit-stay, he would give you his paw and bark on command. How he loved to run free in the field across from our house and lay on his back and have his belly rubbed. I work second shift and when I got home from work, Midnight would always be waiting for me to go for a Midnight walk. Whenever he would wake up in the morning, he would start yawning; first quietly, and then eventually turning to barks to let us know it was time to bring him out.

About 2 months before he died, Midnight had a seizure for the first time. At first we didn’t think anything of it since it never happened before. He had another one about a month later and finally two the night before he passed. When we finally got him to the vets, he was so aggressive we couldn’t even get a muzzle on him. He went after the vet, and since he bit a technician while getting a kennel cough shot several months earlier, we thought the best thing to do would be to send him to eternal rest.

The first few weeks were extremely painful with sadness, anger and guilt. We got another dog a few months later, and I’m finally at peace with what happened with Midnight. Midnight was my first dog and I will never forget him. The time we had together was short, but I’m glad I was able to give him a good life on this earth.

With Love,
Midnight
