"Mittens"

October 1985 ----- July 2000

Cat

My cat Mittens was born in October 1985.

I got her when she was about six weeks old.

She was the most adorable kitty I have ever seen!

A beautiful long-haired calico she was so busy and rowdy!

Tearing through the house arching her back and walking sideways

jumping from a standstill and swinging

over the rail of a chair back.

But eventually like the rest of us as she got a little older that all changed.

She was so loving...always waiting for me to come home and

would meet me at the door.

Of course she slept with me every night and woke me up each

morning by sitting smack in front of my face and staring at me!!

And that little motor of hers...oh how it ran!!

She also would stick her nose in my ears...very annoying at 5:00 a.m.

but I sure do miss that!

"Mitts" had no time at all for her younger sister "Sassy"

who I have to say was always a real pain to "Mitts."

Sassy would attack her every chance she got.

I think Mittens' favorite thing to do was to lie on her back and

follow all the "sun spots" around the house throughout the day.

Also laying by the blazing fireplace in the winter

was really high on her list of favorites!

On June 17th I took Mittens to the vet as she had no appetite

and laid in one spot for the better part of a day and all night.

She stayed at the vet for five days and it was determined that she was diabetic.

I visited her each night after work and the night I took her home of course

I had to learn how to give her insulin shots twice each day.

I thought it was going pretty well but in the late afternoon of July 4th

I realized I hadn't seen Mitts all afternoon.

I found her underneath my bed and was sure she had passed away.

My friend who is a nurse came over quickly and

also thought Mitts was gone -- no heartbeat or breathing.

She did a little CPR and Mitts twitched a little and then went into a seizure.

I rushed her to the emergency veterinary hospital

where they found that her blood sugar had gone way low and

she continued to have seizures.

I had to make the hardest decision of my life

and that was to end my dear friends life after 15 years.

I told her I was so sorry and that I loved her.

It was over very quickly. She is buried in my parents' back yard

alongside of my dog Molly who passed away November 11 1999

at the age of seven. I will never forget either one of them.

I always called them "the girls."
