Jack Russell
We moved house in 1991 up to the Highlands of Scotland.
Patch my Jack Russell bitch,my husband and my son.
Later that year I discovered that we were going to have a baby
due in July 1992. We had another son and we were out walking
when Patch disappeared.
She was in season and the inevitable happened and we
discovered that there was pups due in September.
How was I going to cope with a 2 month old baby and puppies?
There was no question of not letting her have them.
The only worry was that she was 6 a bit old for a first litter.
We woke up one day to find her whining and pacing the floor
she was in labour. 12 hours later and still nothing was happening,
so off she went to the vet and she ended up getting a caesarian
the same as me.
She originally had 7 pups but 2 died. She came home from the
vets and settled into motherhood along with me.
If I had some baby blues she would bring me through a pup
and sit it on my knee as if to say “look I’ve got one too”.
We kept one pup so my son and her daughter grew up together.
Recently she went to the vet and she told me that Patch had 2 days left to live.
I have been inconsolable since. I still have her daughter with me
Blue but Patch is still with me in spirit. The same way she was always with
me when she was alive and we were new mothers together.
I feel honored that she loved me so much.
