Ruger was abandoned with his longtime canine companion Mitzi when they were 13 and 14 years old, because their people were getting new carpeting. Put in separate cages in the shelter, Ruger broke a few teeth trying to chew through the cage to get to Mitzi who, resigned to her fate, curled up in a little ball and waited to die.
Instead, a compassionate shelter worker alerted me to their plight, and the devoted duo came home with me in May. Ruger took gentle care of Mitzi, making sure she ate, drank and slept, always watching over her with a loving and protective eye. Nothing was too good for his friend.
Unfortunately Mitzi had gone without proper care for far too long, and her weakened body began to shut down. Ruger grieved with us as his friend crossed the Rainbow Bridge just six months after they were rescued.
Ruger thankfully was able to bond with us as his family but he never developed another close canine friendship. He was a loving boy who enjoyed toys and being with his people.
We are very grateful to have given this sweet bonded pair those last precious months together, and that Ruger was able to accept us as his family and enjoy the remainder of his life feeling secure and loved.
Enjoy being reunited with Mitzi sweet boy,
