Sheena by John & Bekye Eckert / John & Bekye and all your little train wreck friends

Nearly four years ago, I went to a shelter to do a pickup for another rescue. A sad, dirty, older blind dog caught my eye. He had lived outside all his life, they told me, chained to a shed. He was surrendered with a companion who was sick and had already been euthanized. “Chino” too was on the euthanasia list because, after all, who would
want an old blind dog?

Chino came home with me that day and, after hours of intense grooming, we discovered he was a she! And she needed a pretty name to go with her new life,
so we called her Sheena.

Her calm demeanor and loving nature went straight to our hearts and stayed there. Sheena was truly the sweetest, kindest, most placid and undemanding little soul
that I have ever known.

She asked for nothing. She would patiently wait her turn, never pushing to the front of the line, never asking for anything but always grateful for whatever we gave her.

Her favorite occupation, next to eating, was sleeping. After over a decade on the hard ground, all those soft beds must have felt like heaven! We would joke that Sheena had two speeds: “slow and off.”

Unfortunately the toll of so many years of neglect finally caught up with her. We tweaked and re-tweaked her medications but in spite of our best efforts, prayers, and tears, she crossed over in my arms.

Sweet girl we miss your gentle and loving spirit.
