I can still remember the day I went to Omar’s searching for a special little friend to take home. The sales clerk said you were special; and right away when I picked you up … I knew she was right. I wanted a girl .. a pretty, hand-fed, cinnamon colored cockatiel .. and you were the one. We went home together with you on my shoulder, both of us a bit scared how we’d get along with each other. Right away we connected and for the next 7 1/2 years we were together. When you heard my voice, you chirped for me; when I entered a room, you flew to me; and when I exited a room you’d cry for me.
I always looked forward to coming home from work or play, or waking up to hear you greet me w/your chirps .. maybe you annoyed the neighbors, and even me on occasion, but now I realize how much I miss your noises, I miss your elatedness to be free from your cage and close to me.
I always said I was the luckiest bird owner cause I had you. Kirbi, you loved me unconditionally, and even when I seemed to stay out late, scolded you for making a mess on me, or told you “no” when you wanted to nibble on things, you always came to me for a scratch on the head or kiss on the beak. You always got real excited when you heard my keys rattle to open the door … chirping excited greetings to see me … flipping upside down in your cage and stretching your wings … those memories of you I will always treasure.
When I realized there was something wrong with you, it was too late to make you better. All I could do was provide a comfortable and loving home for your final days. I hope our last days together were as special for you
as they were for me.
Your life and death taught me many lessons, and for that I am grateful and am so happy that I had you in my life.
