Lidet by Glenda Harlow / Mommy

Before the day we met I was terrified of Pit Bulls. But you quickly changed that; you jumped into the open window of my green Ford Tempo and right into my heart.

You were recently involved in a fight even though you were pregnant. You had open sores on your beautiful body and your right ear was nearly torn off. You were “rescued” in Fayetteville, Arkansas and taken to Tahlequah, Oklahoma in the latter part of May 2000. I had two other dogs at the time, “Snoop” a black lab-rottie mix and “Brutus” a sweet Rottweiler who was 7 months old.

Snoop had to be euthanized in June 2000; he had an inoperable brain tumor and turned against me. Less than a week later some one poisoned Brutus. You helped me get through this very sad and painful time in my life. I kept you in the house where you would be comfortable and safe.

When I returned home from work you were always waiting inside by the door wagging your tail and kissing my hand. After we would eat dinner I would lay on the couch with the T.V. remote in my hand you would lay on my tummy with your head tucked under my chin.

Those moments were so precious to me. At bedtime you would put your head on my pillow and put your paw around my neck. I always felt so safe when
you were beside me.

On June 30, 2000 you had some of the most beautiful puppies I have ever seen. By then the cruel beast who still in legality owned you insisted that I bring you back to him or he would call the police. He let me keep you and the babies for one week before returning you. Against my better judgment and because I was afraid that this monster would do something to the son who had taken you from him, I took you back to him.

I still got to see you whenever I visited my mother, as she lived not far from you, it was obvious he continued to make you fight. In the fall you finally refused to fight for him anymore, I had moved back next door to you and you refused to eat and spent hours watching and staring over at me and in June of 2001 in the spring you had another litter of puppies. He finally agreed to sell you to me because he thought you were dying, the joke was on him, I fed you, nursed you and doctored you had a deep puncture wound on your left front leg all way to the bone and a “C” shape bite on your left side of your face. You were covered with scars but you were and always would be so beautiful to me. I always hate him for what you made you do and the things that happened to you.

We moved to Lincoln, Arkansas and we were happy there. After I had gotten you, I had discovered that you neither liked nor trusted men anymore. The only males that you tolerated were my middle son and my youngest son. You loved my mother and whenever you came into the house you would always jump onto her bed and lay your big head on her.

In October 2001 you had your last litter of puppies, the birth was hard for you and I decided that you were getting up in years and to old to be having puppies so I had you spayed.

Our days would start by me feeding you and petting you. We would always have a race to see who would get to sit on top of your house; I believed it worked out 50/50 most of the time. I treasure those early mornings sessions with you. You would always snuggle so close to me, putting your front legs around my neck and hugging me back and kissing my face. I truly miss those moments

May 7, 2003 you snipped at my two sons that you had tolerated in the past, and then on May 25, 2003 the unthinkable happened! You tried to bite my face when I put your food in your bowl, the Vet had told me that you heart was enlarged because of all the steroids that the sadistic man who fought you had given you when he was fighting you in the first 5-6 years of your life.

Further research revealed that those same steroids cause swelling in your brain, which caused you constant pain. I was never angry with you for you behavior the last three weeks of your life I blame your previous owner that cruel greedy man for that.

The last three days of your life you wouldn’t let me or anyone else near you, I had to push your food to you and fill your water bowl with a hose from a distance.

May 28, 2003 the County Animal Control Officer came out to tranquilize you so I could take you to be euthanized, the assistant police chief accompanied him. They had to use 3 darts on you to knock you out; they were amazed since normally it only takes 2 darts to knock out a wild wolf.

The Assistant Chief talked to me this whole heart breaking time, he shared a story of a dog he had as a young boy who had been poisoned, County Deputy also came by and helped comfort me, even the Police Chief had stopped by as they all knew you and loved you too, however this ordeal was to much for the Police Chief to witness
that he had to leave.

Finally you became unconscious and all 3 men carried you to my car and laid you inside. I covered you with your blanket so you wouldn’t be cold. On arrival at the local vet, the assistant carried you inside; she then euthanized you, which was hard in locating a vein due to
all your scars and scar tissue.

My Vet could not do this as she loved you as much as I and this was even more harder for her to do, so her assistant had to do the chore.

I was holding your head and kissing you and telling you how much “I Loved You” and to go cross over “Rainbow Bridge” and wait for me there. My Precious Girl when you finally crossed over you were surrounded by three women who were crying and telling you what a good girl you were and how much they too loved you and will miss you.

Every time I hear the song “My Girl” by the Temptations I remember how you would lay your head on my chest and close your eyes and sigh. I love singing that song to you.

You were and always will be “My Girl”
… I Love you and Miss you so Much…
