Belle by Donna Bergener / Robby, Donna, & Kai Bergener

I thought I would share this and maybe it was just me reading more into something that wasn’t there. Belle was only two years old and so full of life! We live on six acres of land complete with a pond she loved to swim in. It was not uncommon for me to let her out to use the bathroom and have her return soaking wet from swimming. She was so smart and even learned to open our front door and let herself out.

Then on Friday night (8/19/05) my husband and I were watching a movie. It was about 12:30 when the movie was over. I got up and walked into the bathroom to take my contacts out. I noticed that Belle was laying in her kennel, which she hates. She always hid under the bed if she thought we were going to put her in it. I tried to call her out but she wouldn’t move, not even to wag her tail. I knew something was wrong and touched her, at which point I noticed how cold she was. We rushed her to the Emergency Vet.

The Veterinarian ran blood tests and showed that the only thing wrong was her liver levels, she had low blood sugar. (I have skipped the parts about her diarrhea) She was hooked up to an IV and had warm blankets and rubber gloves with warm water placed around her. The Vet gave her some glucose and she seemed to be doing better. She felt much warmer and was even sitting up. The vet concluded that she had probably gotten into something and it had poisoned her or she could have had some kind of virus that caused it. There was no way of knowing for sure without sending out blood to a lab, which would have
taken two weeks to get results on.

Since she was perking up the vet felt as if it was poison and that by flushing out her system she would be fine. She wanted to keep her there over night and told me to call her about 2 the next afternoon. She told me no news was good news. It was about 3 am when we returned home and crawled into bed. About 8:30 am the phone rang waking me up. I got up to get it but missed the call, but immediately rang again. I knew it was about Belle and it wasn’t good. I answered and it was the Vet calling to tell me that she had worsened. She was throwing up and passing black stool which meant she was digesting blood. She told me she was barely breathing and that basically it was a matter of time before she died.

She suggested putting her down so that she would not suffer. I told her to do so and hung up the phone. I sat on our bed and woke my husband up. I told him and sat there for a minute. I then walked outside and sat on our front porch steps. I was crying and just could not believe that our dog who was so full of life and so young was gone. There was just no way that was possible! I noticed to my right a swarm of what I thought were gnats. The kind you see swarming each other in a field.
But there was a difference.

The “gnats” were solid black and the size of bb’s. They were swarming each other and then all of a sudden separated in to groups of two or three. They separated one group on top of the other, there was probably six inches of space in between each. They began circling each other so fast that it made the shape of a diamond, one on top of the other. They were above me so I was looking up through a diamond shaped tunnel. Then they just disappeared. I have never in my life seen
a gnat that black in color and so big.

I am even wondering if they were gnats because I saw no wings, they were just black dots. I have certainly never seen “gnats” take such a shape. I was so in awe of what I saw I just knew it was Belle. I just knew it was her and that she had come back to show me she was ok.

Maybe what I saw was just a swarm of gnats, but since I have never seen anything like it I choose to believe it was her. I firmly believe now more then ever that our animals do have souls and
that she is waiting for us!

We miss you Belle!
