Jake by Mary Ellen Casey / Your adopted Mother

I adopted Jake in the summer of 2004, after I had lost my mother (1/24/04). My father passed away in 1988. So the house was pretty empty after my brother Steve and my sister-in-law Helen left to go back to Pittsburgh, Pa. I have another brother who lives in Wethersfield, Ct. I live in Bristol, Ct. In the local paper was a small write up for “Adopt a Pet” day. It was sponsored by a local nursing home. The North Shore Animal League were there along with the North Haven (CT) animal shelter. So I went down to see if they had any cats to be adopted. There were 4. Two males and 2 females. The 2 males were brothers, they were Samson and Jake. The 2 females were okay, one was about 2 yrs. old and wanted to be petted and the other was laying in back of her cage. So looked at Samson and was told that he was diabetic.

I am unemployed and that would be a major expense. So I took Jake. At the time I was having my own medical issues that required me to be hospitalized and then onto a rehab. I was gone for 8 months. My friend was taking care of Jake at my house. But Jake was about to have his own medical crises. He was diagnosed as a diabetic. Karen did her best to take care of him, but she had her own family and pets. So she had to take Jake to the Burlington Vet Hospital. He stayed there for 4 months.

It was not until May 2006 when we were home. Then about 8 months ago, my sister-in-law came over to see me and noticed that Jake has lost some weight. It was about 2 weeks later is when he started to eat less food and that is when I took him to the vets and he was diagnosed with Large cell lymphoma. The Dr. started chemo. treatments and it took care of the problem in his liver. It would be the spleen that would give him trouble. It did and with all of the medicine he got it was not working and I could not put Jake through any more shots. I will miss his laying in my lap and sleeping with me at night.

I will always miss you,
Jake
