Beloved Doberman/Weimaraner mix
I adopted Arrow from the Denver dog pound.
I always said I “sprung” him out. Because it was like a jail.
He was so skinny. Each rib showed and I could see the saucers
of his hip bones. That was in October 1987. They told me he was
about 1 year old. From that day on we were inseparable.
I had two other dogs too. The four of us traveled from Colorado to
South Carolina Christmas 1987 and as we were heading back to Colorado
the worst snow storm South Carolina had seen hit and we got stuck in
Spartanburg SC along with many other travelers.
Everything was working out well – I had this little car that was
getting us through the foot high snow. When I thought we were going
to be stranded on the side of the highway there appeared an exit.
I gunned it up the ramp and made it slip sliding around.
There was one of those Waffle King type places and a Comfort Inn.
The Comfort Inn was full. (No room at the inn) I laid the seats down in the
car (hatch back) and made a nice bed for us.
Two of my dogs were small 20 pounders and Arrow and I were bigger.
We parked at the Waffle King place and I let the engine run to keep it warm.
I would go inside and get coffee. Some trucker gave me some crap and
I told him I wasn’t interested. The employees were so nice.
About 2 o’clock in the morning one of them made an egg sandwich for Arrow.
Here this is for your dog. The second day we still couldn’t get out.
There was room at the Inn though and they let me bring my pets in.
The next morning I was able to get out on road again.
I will always remember sitting in the room that night by candlelight with
my beloveds surrounding me.
The reason I called this Full Circle is because it struck me after 13 years with
Arrow when he died he looked almost like he did when I first rescued him.
At the end he was so sick and had lost so much weight.
But in between those years he was fat sassy and happy. It is an incredible
loss to me. I have a hole in my heart as big as Texas.
It is a hollow feeling as they say. I have so many good memories.
This one just came to me for some reason. I still have the candle holder I
used that night. I bought it at Waccamaw Pottery while we were in MB
visiting my mom that Christmas.
It is a mouse sitting at a desk. In the desk is hole where
the candle sits.
