Barney by Jennifer / Mommy

Barney first came into my life in August of 1994. My mom and stepdad had adopted Barney from a guy who was moving to England and couldn’t take Barney with him. Little did I know, my mom planned to give Barney to me when I moved to a new place where I could have a pet.

I moved in November and was given Barney as a Christmas gift that year (1994). I was so excited to have my first dog as an adult living on my own. Barney became my constant companion. He loved to play ball and take walks. In 1996, I adopted a second dog, Bandit, and Barney loved playing with his new “brother.” Barney, Bandit and I went on trips together, did errands together, and just had great fun. Barney was always protective of me, even to the point of laying in front of the tub as I took a shower. Barney suffered from many common, and uncommon, cocker spaniel afflictions (that’s where Barney became an expensive gift…but still the best gift I ever received).

He had constant ear infections, had skin allergies, a red-blood cell anemia disease (which was in remission from 1998 until his death), a cataract at age 5 (he had surgery to take care of it), a salivary gland growth that had to be removed, and heart disease. Even with all his health problems, Barney was happy and loved people. He always wagged his tail and gave kisses at the animal clinic.

His vet said he was a very laid-back, well-behaved, loving cocker spaniel…..Barney hardly ever cried at the vet, even when he had to have deep ear cleanings. Barney had been on Lasix for a couple of years, but his heart had started racing and beating erratically.

We were supposed to start a new medication the day he died. He died in one of his favorite spots….near the couch and front door,
waiting for me to come home….

With lasting love,
Barney
