Long Time Ago

Dog

I still remember it like it was yesterday.

My brothers and sisters and I would walk to the bus stop

each morning with our dog by our side and when we came home

she’d be there waiting on us to walk us back home.

That was until she got too old then she would wait at the

corner of our yard and watch for us.

She was the best dog I have ever known.

She got sick one year during a drought and never recovered.

I was so little then that I don’t remember the year she died but I

do remember how I felt and I do remember everything

about that day. My parents took her to the vet and they

came home but not with her.

They said she died at the vets. I was torn apart.

The best times I remember are during the fourth of July.

We would go on the road and light fireworks and she would

just bark and chase them around and try to bite them-sometimes she

managed to get a hold of one and would get burnt but not bad

it would just singe her hair off.

She got so jealous when my sister got another dog and had to

share her yard with the dog. She would sit and stare at the other

dog all day till we finally got rid of it.

She loved cats too. I remember one time we had this cat that we

called our “mother cat “because she always had kittens and the

babies ended up nursing off of Blacky since she had just had puppies.

There were times when we had other kittens around that would

try to nurse but go away hungry.

She was so sweet to all living creatures.

I don’t remember a time that I saw her even kill a fly- I swear!

During the summer my parents would let her in the house if

it got too hot outside and she would come running up

to us and jump and lick our faces.

She loved to be inside.

If you were sleeping she’d come and wake you up too.

She was the best dog and I miss her

more than ever.
