Bree by Michael and Connie Van Slooten / Mommy, Daddy, Jennifer, and Loren

In mid-February, 2001, our boy Loren came home with a beautiful brindle girl puppy pit bull who looked frightened and vulnerable. In spite of the responsibilities of the presence of our adored Cairn terrier Baby and our Westie Daisy, we took Bree in.

Our Bree girl had beautiful soulful eyes that seemed to look right through us, as if to say “I’m frightened! Will you love me and care for me? I need a mommy and a daddy!” Of course, we fell head over heels in love with her,
quite literally at first sight.

In the coming months we watched her begin to thrive and blossom, growing into a sweet, gentle, yet playful and energetic, member of our family. She would often come in the morning to try to hop up on the bed and cuddle with us in the morning, and she would give a beautiful good morning growl when she first would see us. Coming home would be equally joyous, and a “good afternoon” growl was also awaiting any of us when we got home to her

In spite of her size, her older sister Daisy was totally in charge, and Bree followed her everywhere, learning all the tricks of home doggieness from her little-big sister. They were especially close, giving each other doggie kisses regularly, and also curling up next to each other at night on the doggie bed. Loren’s older sister Jennifer also had a special spot in Bree’s heart, as did Bree in Jennifer’s closet, where Bree often hid when she was up to her try-to-get-them-to-stay-at-home antics
But Bree was a closest to Connie, and she would curl up on her side of the bed in the morning when Connie was trying to get ready to go to work. Her sweet eyes told us all very clearly, ” But mommy, you can’t go to work; you have to stay home and play with me!”

Walks and trips to the beach were a special time for all of our four-legged children. All of them would go bonkers when the words “bye-bye” were spoken, and there would be barking and craziness. At the beach, Bree especially liked the water, and she would chase sticks and balls into the surf.

Bree literally became like a baby daughter to us, and she acquired more nicknames than anyone under the sun. We called her “Bree-Bree, Brindle Breekins, Bee-Bee,” and “Baby Girl,” among others.

A few days ago, our Baby Girl was taken in a tragic accident in our yard, and Michael came home to her lifeless body. Our whole family is devastated, and nothing can console us; we loved her dearly and she will live forever in our memories.
