” Mittens “
Aug. 13 1988 —- June 13 2001
Cat
The tale of the life of Mittens begins as does her brother,
Dennis before they were born.
An employee of a Veterinarian found his mother
after a car had hit her.
The Vet was lucky and was able to save her.
The employee took the cat home when she was released
from the hospital. After a while the cat began to gain a lot of weight.
Therefore the employee had the Vet check the cat out to find the
reason for this type of weight gain.
It turned out that the Vet not only saved the mother’s life
but also the lives of four kittens.
We adopted from Mittens this litter with her brother Dennis.
When Mittens arrived home our house was never the same.
We named her Mittens because of the white on her paws;
they looked as though she was wearing mittens on her paws.
She always followed her brother Dennis into what ever
mischief he caused.
So no matter what Dennis did in a mischievous way,
along side would be Mittens helping him.
They both knew it was wrong but they would just stand there
and give us their look as if they were saying “What’s the matter
this is our castle.
You are here just to serve us as our slaves.
Our say rules – learn to live with it.” We did and have never
regretted the time we had with both of them.
Even though Dennis and Mittens were from the same litter they
were as different as any brother and sister can be.
Mittens as you see from her picture was a tabby cat with the M in
the middle of her forehead whereas her brother
was a tuxedo cat.
Mittens in the beginning was a typical cat.
Everything was done only if she wanted it. If she decided that
she wanted to be petted she would allow it.
If she wanted to sit next to you or be in bed with you
it had to be on her terms. However as she grew older
and especially after Dennis passed away,
she become so affectionate that it was hard to remember
that she never like to be with you.
Mittens was so delicate she had small little paws at the end
of dainty legs but if she happened to run into you as they ran
around the house you felt as though a truck hit you and
not this delicate little cat.
Although Mittens was delicate and had little paws
she had Joel and I wrapped around these paws.
Mittens was also the hardy of the two.
Only one time we had to take her to an emergency hospital.
It turned out that because she was little she would from time
to time suffer from constipation.
However with proper food and at times a laxative
she was extremely healthy.
When Dennis passed away everyone told us that Mittens might
go into a depression. However from all points of view it looked as
though she understood why Dennis was no longer with us.
She saw how Dennis suffered on his last night at home.
We figured that maybe Dennis came to her and explained that
he had no choice but to leave.
Everything seemed to be going great with her.
However in March 2001 again our world turned upside down.
Mittens was diagnosed as having diabetes.
After a short stay in the hospital Mittens returned home
seemingly healthy. We had to give her an insulin shot every morning
but she seemed to tolerate it and enjoyed the rest of the day.
June 8th was the beginning of the end.
Although everything appeared great with Mittens having a big
appetite it turned out that her diabetes was not under control.
She had a ketoacidosis attack which we did not realize since we
were not informed that such a situation could occur even if a
cat will have an appetite.
Mittens tried very hard but on June 13th she joined
her brother in heaven.
I keep thinking why did we not get a second opinion on the type
of treatment she should be getting in order to keep her diabetes
completely under control.
However I believe that no matter what we did Mittens would
have passed away because it was just her time to go to heaven.
She waits for us with her brother until such time as we will be
reunited and cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
We will always remember the good times we had with Mittens.
Both my brother Dennis and myself have a website
