Corky was left tied to the fence at an area shelter which I volunteered at. He was a 53 pound Lab, Shepherd, and Hound mix with severe gastrointestinal problems and a growth on his nose.
It did not take long for Corky to love and trust the volunteers and for them to do the same for him. Within a matter of weeks, he had put weight on and his health issues had cleared up, now it was time to try
to find him a new home.
Unfortunately, no one was interested in Corky because he was a little older and so he spent two and a half years calling the shelter his “home”. Upon our loss of our latest shelter rescue, my husband and I wanted to help another dog in need and felt Corky would be the right “fit” in our lives. This malnourished and timid mutt became our handsome, 80 pound “baby”. Corky was a very sweet, playful, loving companion but also had some issues with dominance as we found out, but we never loved him any less.
After only having him for two years, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. We were completely devastated when the vets told us he only had weeks to months to live. We cherished every day that he was still with us and stood by his side through every challenge that he faced, from surgery up to his last breath. We dealt with many obstacles along the way not knowing how much longer he would be with us.
Corky managed to bring us joy and happiness for another year and a half up until three days ago, when the mass in his neck grew to the point where it was almost impossible for him to breathe. During that time, he had a very good quality of life. It was very difficult to say goodbye in such a traumatic situation.
Corky is deeply missed but we will never forget what he brought to our lives and we will never forget him.
Love Always,
