Growing up never having a pet of any kind, I knew that once I started a family that a pet would make it complete. Before my son turned two we began visiting the Dog Pound hoping to find a perfect match to our family. After 6 months of weekly visits we nearly gave up. My son seemed afraid of any dog we encountered, until we met Lady.

Lady was a 10 month old, sheltie-chocolate lab mix. She had been abandoned and in need of much love. My son took to her immediately as did my husband and I and Lady to us.

That was 14 years ago. our life with Lady has been full of joy, shared love and gentleness. Lady was always there “herding” the kids as they played in the yard, protecting them from any harm. Watching her chase squirrels but never quite catching them was a joy to watch. She loved other animals as much as people and would kiss her “sister” (our cat Rajah) whenever they had been separated for too long.

Over the last year or so Lady developed Cushings disease and in recent months a Cancerous growth on her leg that filled continuously with blood. As this growth grew, our choices for treatment shriveled. We knew that her quality of life was in jeopardy.

Making a decision to “do the right thing” was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. The look in her eyes told us though that it was time. Afraid of how devastating this would be on my son, I found that
he was my pillar of strength.

When we brought our Lady to the Vet we were given as much time as we needed with her. My husband and son stayed with her through the process. My husband says that she was just so relaxed and the look in her eyes almost seemed to say thank you. She nuzzled her nose in his arm as she has done many times and went to sleep.

We all feel such an emptiness in our home and in our hearts. My son however reminds us daily that Lady is in a much better place, chasing unlimited squirrels into trees to her hearts content.

We will always remember and love Lady. She was a true part of our family and will live on in our hearts forever.

We love you Lady Jane,
Donna
